Former Judge Charles Delaney of Burlington, VT; ethical gremlin

The state of Vermont presented Charles Delaney with a law license in 2005 after he graduated from the University of Vermont School of Law.

The Vermont Judicial Conduct Board found Charlie guilty of engaging in the following misconduct, all of which took place while he served as an Chittenden County Assistant Judge.

  • Failed to formally bill for or otherwise track or record the specific time he spent related to his oversight and supervision of the Courthouse Grounds Restoration Project
  • Charlie submitted written request to receive a bonus payment of $2,000
  • The bonus was requested as compensation for work Charlie performed as an Assistant Judge in his administration and oversight of the Courthouse Grounds Restoration Project
  • Charlie personally approved his own $2,000 bonus
  • Failed to uphold and promote independence, integrity, and impartiality of the judiciary
  • Failed to avoid impropriety and the appearance of impropriety
  • Failed to comply with the law (scofflaw)
  • Failed to act in manner promoting public confidence in the judiciary
  • Engaged in misconduct by using his positions as Assistant Judge to approve and obtain a personal economic benefit in the form of a $2,000 bonus, which violated the Vermont Code of Judicial Conduct

As a direct consequence of his misconduct, the cheerleaders for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Vermont Supreme Court punished Charlie by gifting him with a complimentary reprimand.

As we speak (ca. March 2024), Charlie practices his so-called brand of law in Burlington, Vermont.
