Judge Albert Mitchell Jr. of Tucumcari, NM; ethical goblin

The Judicial Standards Commission found Judge Mitchell guilty of the following misconduct.

  • Made statements he had Governor’s ear and could call on her to line-item veto funds for Quay County if the court security measures he wanted were not met
  • Made statements that a prominent legislator could take Quay County court security measures into his own hands and pass a law to provide the measures that Al was demanding
  • Failed to act in dignified, patient and courteous manner
  • Abused his judicial office
  • Created the appearance of impropriety
  • Compromised judicial independence
  • Allowed external interests to influence judicial actions

As a direct consequence of his misconduct, the enablers for Attorney Misfits sitting on the New Mexico Supreme Court punished Al by gifting him with a complimentary admonishment.

As we speak (ca. May 2019), Al continues to sit as a judge of the 10th Judicial District Court in Tucumcari, New Mexico.
