Judge Deborah Bernini of Tucson, AZ; ethical troll

The state of Arizona provided Deborah Bernini with a law license in 1994 after she graduated from the University of Arizona School of Law.

The Commission on Judicial Conduct found Debbie guilty of engaging in the following misconduct.

• Debbie authored a letter to the editor of the Arizona Daily Star in which she defended an attorney, Rick Unklesbay,
• from what she perceived as unfair attacks from the newly elected Pima County Attorney, Laura Conover
• Mr. Unklesbay had previously worked as a prosecutor for the Pima County Attorney’s Office
• Debbie’s letter vouched for the professionalism and integrity of Mr. Unklesbay
• Debbie signed the letter using her judicial title
• At the time Debbie authored the Unklesbay letter, she was presiding over a criminal matter, State v. Clements in the Pima County Superior Court, a matter being prosecuted by the Pima County Attorney’s Office
• Failed to act in manner promoting public confidence in integrity of the judiciary
• Failed to avoid impropriety and the appearance of impropriety
• Abuse the prestige of her judicial office to advance her personal or economic interests or that of others, or allowed others to do so
• Failed to disqualify herself from a matter when she was required to so act
• Failed to perform the duties of her judicial office, including administrative duties, without bias or prejudice
• Improperly made a public statement that might reasonably be expected to affect the outcome or impair the fairness of a matter pending or impending in any court

As a direct consequence of her misconduct, the cheerleaders for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Arizona Supreme Court punished Debbie by gifting her with a complimentary reprimand.
