Did Houston Rep. William Callegari improperly pocket mileage payments from the State?
Texas State Rep. William Callegari has allegedly been representing the best interests of his constituents in the El Paso area for the last ten years. He is now running for a sixth term for the 132nd Assembly District against Sylvia Mintz in the November 2010 election.
As you’ll see from the text box below, Rep. Callegari has billed and collected over $12,000 from the State for mileage reimbursements from September 6, 2007 through May 6, 2010. In addition, he collected over $27,000 in mileage payments from his campaign during the same period of time, as you’ll see from the text box below. Also, you’ll see the exact amounts his campaign paid him for mileage listed below.
1 – January through May 6, 2010
2 – September 6 through December 21, 2007
Tax Liability for Commuting
It is black letter law that the IRS considers commuting to be taxable income. I suspect that Mr. Callegari likely did not report commuting mileage to the IRS as income. However, if he did and/or claims he did, then I’m sure he would be more than happy to release copies of his tax returns proving he so acted.
Reporting Rep. Callegari’s conduct to the proper authorities
A complaint will be filed shortly with Travis County DA, the Texas State Controller, the IRS and the Texas Ethics Commission regarding Mr. Callegari’s conduct.
