Attorney Jack M. Atwood of Plymouth, MA; serial thief

Sadly the Massachusetts Supreme Court presented Jack with a law license in 1972. In Jack’s case, he really did treat it as a “license to steal.”

In late 2010, the Board of Bar Overseers and the Massachusetts Surpeme Court charged Jack with a plethora of egregious misconduct, some of which is described below.
  • Billing unconscionable fees
  • Refusing to return unearned fees
  • Failure to provide accounting hours to support sham fee claims
  • Repeatedly failed to advise clients on manner in which he intended to bill them
  • Repeated failures to reduce fee agreements to writing
One glaring instance of Joey cheerfully screwing a client, involved a woman who hired him to represent her in a criminal case. Joey told her his fee would be between $10,000 and $15,000. He asked her and she initially paid him $5,000.

Shortly after paying Joey the $5,000, the woman was served with a complaint for divorce. Joey then agreed to represent her on the divorce; however, as was his practice he never told her what the basis of his fee would be or how it would be determined.

In regards to the criminal case, Joey discussed the matter with the police, the district attorney and the lawyer who represented the client’s husband in the divorce. As a result of these brief discussions, the criminal charges were dismissed in April 2008.

Shortly thereafter, the husband agreed to pay Joey’s client $45,000 as a “partial settlement” in the divorce. The husband then provided Joey with a check in that amount. Joey then deposited the check in his account, paid the client $35,000 and retained $10,000 as his fee for the criminal case.

Remember folks, the lady already paid him $5,000 for the criminal case that was dismissed after brief discussions by Joey with the cops, the DA and the husband’s lawyer. So we have Joey screwing this lady by stealing 10 grand for services he never performed.

As a result of his repeated misconduct, the enablers on the Board of Bar Overseers and the Supreme Court punished Joey by gifting him with a complimentary reprimand.

As we speak (ca. June 2011) Jack the Loser practices law at 88 Sandwich Street in Plymouth, Massachusetts. What a joke!
