Judge Jeannette Traverso of South Africa; ethical dwarf

Jeannette Traverso was presented with a law license in 1968 after she graduated from the University of Stellenbosch Law School.

The Judicial Conduct Committee Commission recently (03/17/15) announced that a panel of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has been appointed to investigate Judge Traverso’s conduct while she presided over her handling of the murder of British businessman Shrien Dewani.

The ethics complaint was filed by the Higher Education Transformation Network (HETN) in January 2015 with the JSC.

In affidavit filed by HETN chairman Lucky Thekisho in support of the complaint, stated that Judge Traverso had failed to give the State a fair hearing and conducted the trial with prejudice. (Francesca Villette)

Mr. Thekisho stated that Judge Traverso had failed to disclose her prior relationship and friendship with defense counsel.

Prior to the jury rendering its verdict in the murder case, Judge Traverso took the highly unusual step of granting defense counsel’s motion to dismiss the charges.

All that’s left now is to see what if any punishment is meted to judge Traverso for her biased conduct that apparently led to the dismissal of murder charges against Mr. Dewani.

As we speak (ca. March 2015), Traverso remains sitting as the Western Cape High Court Deputy Judge President in Cape Town, South Africa.
