Attorney Hillel Chodos of Los Angeles: Today’s “Avarice” Award Winner

The state of Calfiornia presented Hillel Chodos with a law license in 1962 after he graduated from the University of Calfiornia Law Angeles (UCLA)

Law School.

Hillel laughingly claims to be one of

California’s premier litigators. In one matter, Hillel represented Mrs. Navabeh Borman, the wife of multi-millionaire businessman Burton Borman in regards to a divorce action,

Greedy Hillel had the chutzpah to actually claim that his so-called services were worth $5,000 an hour for working 1,800 hours on Mrs. Borman’s behalf. When Mrs. Hillel balked at paying such an exhobitant fee, Hillel sued her in Superior Court before Judge Barbara Ann Meiers. The trial resulted in a judgment awarding Hillel $7.8 in fees for an hourly rate of $433.

Subsequently, Mrs. Hillel appealed and the Court of Appeals ruled that Hillel was only entitled to $1,000 an hour for a total fee of $1.8 million. The court specifically noted that Hillel violated the Code of Conduct when he failed to provide Mrs. Hillel with a written fee agreement.

More importantly, the Court of Appeals ruled that there was no legal or equitable justification for Judge Meiers instructing the jury that it could apply a multiplier of five or six in awarding fees to Hillel. The court went on to call the $7.8 judgment “excessive and inequitable” and “contrary to public policy” since it would reward Hillel for not complying with the State Bar Act’s requirement of a written fee agreement.

It takes a truly greedy individual to actually claim and then bill someone $5,000 an hour for legal services that any competent and ethical attorney could have provided for $300 an hour.

As we speak (ca. July 2014), Greedy Hillel practices at

1559 South Sepulveda Blvd in Los Angeles, California.

Congrats Hillel; keep up the good work! We should let everyone know of your amazing record as one of

Americas “Greediest Losers”; you are far too humble.
