Former Hawaii State Sen. John Leopold; Today’s Public Official Misfit John Leopold is a former Hawaii state senator, representative and Board of Education member. He was defeated by Democrat George Ariyoshi in his 1978 run for governor of Hawaii.
John subsequently moved to Baltimore where he was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates in 1995. In 2006 he was elected Anne Arundel County Executive.
In February 2013, John was found guilty of misconduct in office for using his security detail to perform political campaign activities while on the job and for making a secretary and members of his security detail empty his urine catheter bag for months in 2010.
At the end of John’s criminal trial, Judge Dennis Sweeney described Johnny as “predatory and cruel” for forcing his secretary to empty his catheter bag on her hands and knees up to three times a day for nine or 10 months.
Johnny illegally used members of his government paid security detail to put up campaign signs when he ran for re-election in 2010 when they were on duty as police officers. John also required them to pick up campaign checks and compile dossiers on political opponents.
Shortly after he was found guilty, Johnny resigned as Anne Arundel County Executive.
Judge Sweeney set March 14, 2013 as the date for Johnny’s sentencing.
In order to teach Johnny a lesson he won’t soon forget, Judge Sweeney should order that he be put in charge of emptying the urine catheter bags of each and every inmate at the Maryland Correctional Institution in Hagerstown, Maryland. We’ll see how that makes Johnny Baby feel!
