Justice Joan Melvin of Pittsburgh; lifetime porker, convict

The state of Pennsylvania presented Joan Orie Melvin with a law license in 1981 after she graduated from the DuquesneUniversityLawSchool.

From 1981 when she received her law license, Joan has had her significant snout firmly implanted in the public trough for twenty-eight (28) years as (a) a municipal court judge in Pittsburgh, (b) as Allegheny Common Pleas Judge, and (c) Justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.

Recently, the Dishonorable Justice Melvin was convicted on six (6) counts of corruption.

Melvin, 56, was convicted Thursday in AlleghenyCounty of using her former Superior Court staff, and the state-paid staff of her sister, former Republican state Sen. Jane Orie, to work on Melvin’s 2003 and 2009 campaigns for the Supreme Court. Also convicted was Melvin’s aide and sister, Janine Orie, 58.

Jane Orie, the former lawmaker, wasn’t on trial as she’s serving 2½ to 10 years in prison for misusing her own state-funded staffers on her own campaigns, though she was acquitted of ordering them to work on Melvin’s campaigns, too, when she stood trial and was convicted last year.

Jane was convicted of using her former Superior Court staff, and the state-paid staff of her sister, former Republican state Sen. Jane Orie, to work on her 2003 and 2009 campaigns for the Supreme Court. Jane’s aide and sister were also convicted.

Jane is presently serving a 21/2 year to 10 year prison sentence for misusing her own state-funded staffers on her campaigns. It appears that the avocado doesn’t fall far from the tree when dealing with these sisters.

Justice Melvin has the temerity to refuse to resign from the Supreme Court, which has caused state legislators to contemplate filing impeachment proceedings against her.

As a result of her criminal conviction, Jane now faces misconduct charges filed by the Judicial Conduct Board. The Board has the authority to recommend to the Supreme Court that she be removed from the bench.

Given the past history of the Board, it is more likely than not that they will punish Jane by gifting her with a complimentary reprimand.

As we speak (ca. February 2013) Jane the Convict remains sitting as a justice on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.
