Attorney Stephen Dunlap of Hudson, WI; ethical leprechaun

The state of Wisconsin presented Stephen J. Dunlap with a law license in 1974 after he graduated from Creighton University Law School.

The Office of Lawyer Registration (OLR) found Stephen guilty of the following misconduct.
  1. Failed to provide competent representation (moron)
  2. Failed to communicate with clients
  3. Failed to respond to client inquiries
  4. Failed to act with due diligence (slacker)
  5. Engaged in conduct involving fraud, deceit, dishonesty or misrepresentation
In one matter, Stephen was hired to serve as attorney and personal representative of an estate valued in excess of $700,000. Stephen failed to timely file required tax returns, and respond to inquires from estate beneficiaries.

Stephen also failed to respond to inquires from the department of revenue or provide adequate notices and copies of documents to interested persons.

Stephen who lacked any experience in handling large estates, failed to use adequate procedures to manage the estate, including whether tax returns had been filed or required distributions had been made. Stephen also lacked an understanding on how to use tax deductions to the estate’s best financial advent age, which resulted in the estate unnecessarily paying $25,000 in taxes.

In two status hearings, Stephen made false statements to the court about having communication with an accountant and about having scheduled a meeting with an accountant about estate matters.
As one would suspect, this wasn’t Stephen’s 1st bite at the Attorney Misfit Apple Tree. He previously received a complimentary private reprimand for failing to complete two guardianship final accounts and a probate estate in a timely manner.

As a consequence of her misconduct, the Patron Saints for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Wisconsin Supreme Court punished Stephen by gifting him with another complimentary reprimand. .

As we speak (ca. November 2012) Stephen practices with the Dunlap Law Offices at 600 3rd Street in Hudson, Wisconsin.
