Former Judge Nellie Soriano of Anthony, NM; ethical troll

The New Mexico Judicial Standards Commission found Nellie guilty of engaging in the following misconduct, all of which took place while she was a Anthony Municipal Court Judge.

  • Abused the prestige of her judicial office
  • Engaged in impropriety or the appearance of impropriety
  • Failed to be patient and dignified in dealing with persons appearing before her
  • Threatened City of Anthony Public Works Direct Eleazar Roman with contempt and threatened him with arrest when there were no legal proceedings pending before Nellie when she wasn’t on the bench and took place she spoke to him outside the courtroom
  • Used offensive and foul language when dealing with City of Anthony Library Director Mary Hall
  • Threatened to have Mary Hall fired because she disagreed with the City of Anthony Library Ordinance concerning library procedures
  • Following a meeting of the Board of Trustees/City Council she attended, Nellie complained about code violations that were likely to come before her court
  • Engaged in willful misconduct in office
  • Refused to respect and comply with the law (scofflaw)
  • Failed to impose mandatory penalty for violation of city ordinance
  • Engaged in improper ex parte (one-sided) communications with her neighbor who had cases pending before her
  • Failed to afford due process to one or more parties appearing before her
  • Abused her judicial office by attempting to get special treatment for travel and per diem reimbursements
  • Refused to sign per diem paperwork for court staff to attend out-of-town training because she disagreed with manner in which the City made the financial reimbursements

Apparently, Nellie believed “due process” was the means by which the grass becomes moist in the am.

Rather than await a ruling from the New Mexico Supreme Court that likely would have meant him being tossed off the bench, Nellie did what any coward would do, she resigned his judgeship with an agreement to never seek judicial office in the future.

As we speak (ca. November 2023), it is rumored that Nellie has an application pending for a job as a bathroom attendant at the Walmart Supercenter Store at 7831 Paseo Del Norte Blvd in El Paso, Texas.
