Today’s “Fleece-Flocker” Award Winner is the Cato Institute
Normally one thinks of a “fleece-flocker” as a minister who is ripping-off his followers. In this instance, the flock that the Cato Institute is fleecing is those who are followers of their right wing ideology. It should be noted that the brothers Koch (David and Charles) are on Kato’s Board of Directors. These are the same guys that said they’ll spend $400 million or more during the 2012 election to purchase the services of Mitt Romney, et al.
The Cato Institute is laughingly classified as a 501(c)(3) education institute, meaning contributions are tax deductible. Additionally, any profits Cato realizes are also exempt from being taxed.
In my personal opinion, any right/left wing organization that is basically in business of spewing forth propaganda on behalf of its special-interest sponsors doesn’t deserve to be exempt from any taxes of any kind. Why should those folks or institutions being attacked have to pay additional taxes to make up for what Cato and those of its ilk do not pay?
Cato likes to portray itself as a voice for conservative family values. I find it hypocritical to claim the mantra of “family values” when Cato is engaged in gouging its followers (flock) by charging unconscionable prices for books on its website.
The textbox below provides twenty-seven (27) examples of flock-fleecing by Cato in the sale of books on its website. The average profit realized by Cato for each book listed is $16.54, a price no other book retailer in the country earns or will ever earn.
