Attorney Victor L. Essien of New York City; lying moron The state of New York presented Victor Lawrence Kewsi Essien with a law license in 1985 after he graduated form the University of Ghana.
In late 2010, the Departmental Disciplinary Committee (DDC) for the 1st Judicial Department found Victor guilty of the following misconduct.
Victor was hired to represent a husband and wife to file a personal injury action against the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). Under New York law, any lawsuit against the MTA had to be filed within 13 months of the claimed injury. Since the injury took place in January 2005, the 13 months expired on Feb 15, 2006.
On March 13, 2006, Victor mailed a copy of the lawsuit to his clients with instructions for them to sign and return it to him; however, they failed to have it notarized. Victor then did what any disreputable attorney would do, he falsely notarized their signatures.
After falsely notarizing his clients’ signatures, Victor filed the complaint on April 4, 2006. The MTA asked the court to dismiss the complaint because it was filed after the 13 month time limit had expired. Unlike Victor, the MTA recognized that Feb 15 usually comes before April 4.
Victor the Comic’s Defense
Victor had the chutzpah to defend his criminal conduct in falsely notarizing official court records, by stating that “he had no intention of misleading anyone.” Clearly Victor missed his calling as a standup comedian. How does one accidentally engage in fraud?
As a consequence of his misconduct, the supporters of Attorney Misfits sitting on the Disciplinary Committee punished Victor by gifting him with a complimentary censure.
As we speak (ca. May 2012) Victor continues to practice law at 319 Broadway in New York City.
