Judge Charles Crompton of San Francisco; incompetent boob

The state of California provided Charles S. Crompton with a law license in 1989 after he graduated from Columbia University School of Law.

FYI: Former Gov. Jerry Brown appointed Charlie as a San Francisco County Superior Court judge in 2014. Charlie didn’t get the appointment because he was the most qualified attorney in the greater San Francisco area. He got it because he had proven to be a reliable lackey for the local political hacks.

In one matter, Charlie was assigned to preside over a criminal matter involving Wakeen Best who was charged and tried for animal abuse, burglary, and vandalism. Prior to the jury trial, Wakeen demanded that she be allowed to represent herself. Charlie in his infinite ignorance denied her the constitutional right to so act based on his assertion that she wasn’t mentally fit to so act.

Ms. Best and her attorney appealed Charlie’s asinine ruling to Div. Four of the First District Court of Appeal, which reversed said ruling. In it’s reversal, the court stated in part:

“We recognize that she did not understand such concepts as specific intent and general intent, but her ignorance of legal procedure and language is not a basis to deny her the right to self-representation.”

The court then overturned the jury verdict and Charlie’s three-year jail sentence. In so doing, it ordered a new trial and stated:

“If defendant again seeks to represent herself, the request shall be considered in light of this opinion.”

How is it possible that someone can sit on the bench and be totally ignorant of the meaning of the U.S. and California constitutions and laws that specifically allow a defendant to represent themselves in a court proceeding.

It goes without saying that Charlie the Boob doesn’t much give a damn when or how many times he’s overturned (rebuked in truth) by the appellate court since he is well aware that no California judge has ever been tossed off the bench for being an incompetent boob.
