Supreme Court Justice Brent Appel of Iowa; enabler for Attorney Misfits

The state of Iowa provided Brent R. Appel with a law license in 1977 after he graduated from the University of California at Berkeley.

In 2006 former Gov. Tom Vilsack was duped into appointing Appel as a Justice on the Iowa Supreme Court. Appel garnered this unwarranted appointment because he had provided valuable services as a lackey for the political hacks in power at the time. He certainly wasn’t the most qualified attorney in the state of Iowa. In fact, prior to his appointment to the Supreme Court, Appel had absolutely no judicial experience.

In the recent attorney disciplinary case of Jesse Marzen who was charged with a variety of misconduct, Brent argued against suspending Marzen’s law license for six months. To review an article dealing with Marzen, go the URL listed at the end of this article.

In his dissent, Brent argued that Marzen didn’t deserve to be suspended and that he believed he should have received a complimentary reprimand.

As further proof that the discipline system for Judicial and Attorney Misfits in Iowa is an unmitigated joke is the fact that Brent previously was a member of the Supreme Court’s Bar Conduct Committee.

Unfortunately for Iowans, Brent Appel will be providing them with useless services on the Surpeme Court until 2016.
