Attorney Peter D. Winthrop of Chicago; repeat offender, deceiver

The state of Illinois presented Peter Deforest Winthrop with a law license in 1990.

In the recent past the Disciplinary Commission filed several misconduct charges against Peter, most of which involved his representation of Corrine Rice, a 92-year-old woman for whom he drafted a will and power of attorney. Said misconduct is as follows:
  1. Engaged in an egregious conflict of interest when his representation of Ms. Rice was materially limited by his own personal interests or responsibilities to a third party
  2. Failed to disclose a material fact to a tribunal when disclosure was necessary to avoid assisting in a client’s criminal or fraudulent act
  3. Made a materially false statement to a third person
  4. Engaged in conduct involving dishonest, fraud and deceit
  5. Engaged in conduct that defeated the administration of justice
This wasn’t Pete’s fist bite at the Attorney Misfit Apple Tree. He was previously suspended from practicing law for two years for:
  1. Deceitful and dishonest conduct
  2. Refusing to honor a guarantee he made to a client on a promissory note
  3. Converting client funds to his own use on at least two separate occasions
  4. Making false statements under oath (perjury) during a disciplinary proceeding and a civil proceeding
As a consequence of his current misconduct, the apologists for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Illinois Supreme Court punished Pete by gifting him with another two year suspension of his law license.

Prior to suspending Pete for two years, the comedians on the Surpeme Court had the chutzpah to state “Considering the serious nature of Pete’s conduct, the circumstances surrounding it, and his significant prior discipline, we conclude that a two-year suspension is appropriate in this case.”

As we speak (ca. April 2012) Peter practices with Winthrop & Associates at 4118 W. Lawrence Avenue in Chicago.
