DA Doug Evans of Grenada, MS; serial bigot

The state of Mississippi provided Douglas Evans with a law license in 1983 after he graduated from the University of Mississippi School of Law.

FYI: Doug has had his significant snout firmly implanted in the public trough for the past thirty-five (35) years. Apparently, no self-respecting law firm in Attala, Carroll, Choctaw, Grenada, Montgomery, Webster, and Winston counties offered Doug a good paying job.

In one matter, Doug presided over the 2010 conviction of Curtis Flowers, a black man on death row in Mississippi for the 1996 murder of four people in a furniture store. (Antonia Blumberg)

In a highly unusual ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Flowers’ 2010 conviction on or about June 21, 2019. In its ruling, the Court agreed with Flowers’ lawyers who contended that Doug, who is white, purposefully excluded potential black jurors based on race in the 2010 trial. Defense attorneys argued that the Mississippi Supreme Court failed to properly apply U.S. Supreme Court precedent in determining whether people were unconstitutionally kept off a jury based on race.

Unbelievably, Doug has attempted to convicted Flowers six times, 1997, 1999, 2004, 2007, 2008 and 2010. Two of the trial, the only ones that had more than one African American juror, resulted in hung juries. Three other convictions prior to 2010 were overturned by the Mississippi Supreme Court on a finding of prosecutorial misconduct, which included findings that Doug unconstitutionally excluded jurors on the basis of race.

With his latest “spanking” by the U.S. Supreme Court in its reversal of Flower’s 2010 conviction, Doug will now have to consider whether he will go forward with a seventh trial of Mr. Flowers. Since he’s running unopposed for reelection in November of 2019, one can readily expect that he will be more than happy to retry Flowers a seventh time despite the obvious costs to the taxpayers.

And lastly, have you ever heard of a defendant being tried seven times, especially when the DA has repeatedly been adjudged to have violated his due process rights by excluding blacks as jurors?

As we speak (ca. July 2019), Doug the Bigot continues to sit as the elected District Attorney in Grenada, Mississippi.
