Former Chief Justice Walter Onnoghen of Nigeria: ethical goblin

The Nigerian Law Society presented Walter Nkannu Samuel Onnoghen  with a law license in 1978 after he graduated from the Nigerian School of Law.

The Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) found Justice Onnoghen guilty of the following misconduct.

  • Engaged in gross violations of the Code of Conduct for public officers
  • Rather than resigning his position Walt took steps to frustrate his trial on corruption matters
  • Received and retained in numerous bank accounts huge sums of money in foreign and local currencies
  • Failed to disclose huge sums of funds in his asset declaration forms and documents submitted to the CCT

As a direct consequence of his misconduct, President of Nigeria, Muihammadu Buhari suspended Justice Onnoghen from his position as Chief Justice in late January 2019.

All that remains now is to see what punishment is meted out to Justice Onnoghen regarding the large sums of funds he accumulated and deposited in various accounts in several countries while concealing said funds in his financial disclosure filings.
