Judge Weni Warlia of Indonesia; ethical misfit

The Riau Corruption Trial(RCT) watchdog reported that Judge Warlia was part of a judicial panel that improperly ruled in favor of PT Langgam Inti Hibrindo operational director Frans Katihokang in regards to a 533-hectare land burning case. (Temp.co)

The RCT’s trial watch coordinator Ahlul Fadli told the press that “We found irregularities during the field trial.” In addition, Mr. Fadli said that the defendant in the land burning case was providing lunches to Judge Warlia and his compatriots.

Mr. Fadli opined that Judge Warlia had violated the code of ethics and should have provided or rented the transportation of facilities. The applicable judicial regulations do not allow for judges to use facilities or receive anything of value from individuals being tried before them.

All that remains now is to see how long it takes Judge Warlia to admit his wrongdoing and resign his judicial position before the RTC renders a decision removing him from the bench.

As we speak (ca. July 2016), Judge Warlia continues to sit as a Pelalawan District Court judge in Indonesia.
