Former Judge James Martinek of Solon, IA; greedy loser
The state of Iowa presented James H. Martinek with a law license in 1978 after he graduated from the University of San Diego Law School.
The Iowa Commission on Judicial Qualifications found Jimmy guilty of the following misconduct.
In one matter, while he was employed as a Magistrate Judge, Jimmy maintained a website where he posted information regarding his availability to perform marriage ceremonies at locations other than the courthouse for a fee. Jimmy’s website included photos of him wearing his robes while performing said ceremonies.
On his website promoting his services, Jimmy advised prospective customers that he would charge them $200 for merely performing a marriage ceremony.
However, in an overt effort to take advantage of future customers, Jimmy failed to advise them that he was required to perform wedding services for “free” during official duty hours at the courthouse.
There is no indication as to how many Iowans Jimmy duped by charging them $200 to perform a wedding that they could have received for free during normal court hours.
Shortly after the Commission recommended to the Iowa Supreme Court that Jimmy receive a complimentary reprimand, he resigned, thereby preventing the Court from issuing the reprimand.
As we speak (ca. June 2016), Jimmy practices with the Martinek Law Office at 604 South Market Street in Solon, Iowa. |
