2010 “Chutzpah” Award Winner is CA State Sen. Darrell Steinberg

The WatchDawg is proud to announce that California State Senator Darrell Steinberg is the hands-down winner of this esteemed award, despite keen competition among like-minded colleagues sitting as state legislators in California over the years.

As a public servant dedicated to serving his own personal interests, I’m sorry I mean the public’s interests, Darrell has proved beyond all doubt that he possesses the necessary qualifications to compete in any and all endurance races.

FYI: chutzpah means gall, insolence, brazenness, arrogance, imprudence, effrontery and cockiness, all of which clearly relate to Mr. Steinberg’s conduct as set forth below.

California State Senator Darrell Steinberg (Senate Pro Tem ca. Jan 2011) has dedicated the lion’s share of his adult life porking out at the public trough since receiving his law license in 1984.

Unfortunately, for me and others living in the Folsom, California area, Steinberg is our so-called representative in the State Senate.

While investigating abuses involving luxury vehicles provided to state legislator’s on the public dime, I submitted a public record’s request to the State Senate in early 2008. I specifically asked for copies of (a) fuel purchase receipts and (b) hotel/airfare/meal receipts for all state senators traveling to conferences/seminars at public expense for 2007.

On March 24, 2009 I received a response from the State Senate refusing my request which contained the following hyperbolic (BS) statements:

“We believe that the disclosure of air schedules and related travel information [fuel receipts] poses a serious risk to the security of the individual Senators and therefore, the public interest served by its disclosure is clearly outweighed by the public interest served in not making the disclosure public.”

Claiming a “serious security risk” to himself and other Senators doesn’t pass the involuntary laugh test! This is especially true when one visits the web sites of state senators who are more than happy to announce their future whereabouts, especially when it relates to trolling for campaign contributions.

Apparently, Steinberg authorized funding for the Livermore Lab in the San Francisco Bay area to develop a time machine several years ago, which is used whenever a citizen and/or member of the media demands copies of the public records aforementioned. I suppose the time machine is geared to physically deliver the offending citizen/investigative reporter and the Senator back to Jan 26, 2007 when he/she was attending a conference in Vail, Colorado. Makes perfect sense right Delmas?

For a so-called attorney like Steinberg to foist such an asinine argument in regards to turning over public records takes chutzpah to new and as yet unseen levels.
Congrats Darrell; keep up the good work! We should let your constituents all know of your amazing record; you are far too modest.
