Judge Jeff Cox of Hemphill, TX; favoritism for friends, liar

Unfortunately, Judge Jeff Cox sits as a Justice of the Peace for Sabine County located in Hemphill, Texas.

In late 2011, the Texas Commission on Judicial Conduct found Jeff guilty of the following misconduct.

In late 2009 Wildlife Game Warden Randy Button cited Nathan Ener for failing to complete the harvest log on the back of his hunting license after killing a buck white-tail deer.

Shortly thereafter, Cox met with Button outside theUnbeknownst to Judge Cox, Warden Button recorded their conversation using his truck’s dash cam and a lapel microphone.

Cox then asked Button to “tell me about your deal with Ener.” After the discussion, Cox told Button he was going to dismiss the citation to avoid a potential official oppression lawsuit from being filed against Button and other country officials by Ener.

Judge Cox went on to explain Ener and others wanted to “stir up stuff” about the Sheriff, and that the citation Button issued “will open up a shit storm.” Cox then advised Button that he was going to dismiss the citation to prevent Ener from “muddying your name for bullshit.”

When Ener appeared in Cox’s court, he entered a plea of not guilty and demanded a bench trial. Cox then dismissed the case against Ener with prejudice, meaning it could never be brought again.

Judge Cox’s Hyperbolic (BS) Defense

In his response to the Judicial Commission, Cox had the audacity to claim he didn’t think he was doing anything improper. He added that he didn’t know he was being recorded by Button and that he did not believe he was performing any official duties at the time. Clearly Judge Cox missed his calling as a standup comedian.

As a consequence of his misconduct, the enablers for Judicial Misfits sitting on the Judicial Commission punished Judge Cox by gifting him with a complimentary admonition.

As we speak (ca. May 2012) Cox continues to sit as a Judge on the court in Sabine County.

It is obvious that if you’re a friend or close acquaintance of Judge Cox that you have nothing to fear if you break the law and appear in his so-called court of justice. Put simply, Judge Cox’s motto is to “dispense with justice” rather than “dispense justice.”
