Judge Eleazar Cano of Alpine, TX; ethical gremlin

The state of Texas presented Eleazar Cano with a law license in 2002after he graduated from the Thurgood Marshall School of Law.

The Texas State Commission on Judicial Conduct found Judge Cano guilty of the following misconduct.

  • Improperly authorized the use of his name to endorse Texas Representative Roland Gutierrez, who was campaigning to represent District 19 in the Texas Senate
  • Allowed for improper mailer advertising a “Cinco De Mayo Fiesta” held in Alpine, Texas on April 28,2018 hosted and paid for by Rep. Gutierrez’s campaign that included a photo of Judge Cano and Gutierrez standing together with their arms around each other
  • Improperly authorized campaign flier containing the following language: Judge Eleazar Cano & Rep. Roland Gutierrez look forward to seeing you, paid for by the Roland Gutierrez Campaign
  • Judge Cano improperly endorsed Gutierrez’s candidacy in violation of the Code of Judicial Conduct
  • Improperly used prestige of his judicial office to advance the private interests of Rep. Gutierrez

As a direct consequence of his misconduct, the Patron Saints for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Texas Supreme Court punished Judge Cano by gifting him with a complimentary public warning.

As we speak (ca. April 2019), Eleazar continues to sit as a Brewster County Judge in Alpine, Texas.
