Justice Karen Baker of Arkansas; greedy, lifetime porker

The state of Arkansas presented Karen Baker with a law license in 1983 after she graduated from the University Arkansas at Little Rock Law School.

This isn’t the first time that Karen has taken a bite out of the Judicial Misfit Apple Tree. A previous story about her can be found by visiting the URL listed at the end of this article.

Karen has had her significant snout firmly implanted in the public trough for the past twenty-seven years (1989 to 2016). If it weren’t for a government check, Karen may well have been relegated to working as a greeter at the Walmart Supercenter on Baseline Road in Little Rock.

In 2015, the issue of a pay raise for Supreme Court justices was being discussed by the Arkansas Independent Citizens Commission.

The Citizens Commission gave preliminary approval to proposed salaries that would have increased Karen’s salary to $166,500 from $149,589. This would amount to a pay raise of just over 10%.

However, Karen wasn’t satisfied with sticking it to the overtaxed citizens of Arkansas with a $166,500 salary; she demanded that she be paid $180,000 a year. This would of course amount to a 20% pay raise.

At $180,000, Karen would be earning over twice as much as the average attorney earns in the Little Rock area. She would also be earning over eight times the per capita income of $22,000 and over four times the median household income of $44,000 of Arkansans that actually work for a living.

And lastly, the $166,500 that Karen is now paid is the best paying job she has ever had or ever expected to have. She now demands to be paid more than the Chief Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court ($158,400) and Supreme Court justices of Colorado ($129,000), Wisconsin ($137,000), and Arizona and Minnesota ($142,000).

As we speak (ca. March 2016), Greedy Karen continues to sit as an Associate Justice of the Arkansas Supreme Court.
