Attorney Winston Brown of Milwaukee; ethical elf

The state of Wisconsin presented Winston P. Brown with a law license in 1973 after he graduated from Marquette University Law School.

The Office of Lawyer Registration (OLR) found Winston guilty of the following misconduct.

  • Failed to hold clients’ and third parties’ property in trust account
  • Commingled client funds with personal funds
  • Failed to promptly deliver funds owing to clients
  • Improperly allowed earned fees to remain in trust account w/o disbursing them
  • Used client funds to cover checks issued in matters relating to other clients
  • Made misrepresentations (lied) to court in guardianship matter as to whether funds were being held in guardianship account
  • Made a misrepresentation (lied) to ethics investigators (Up yours, said Winston!)
  • Failed to reconcile trust account over 4-year period of time
  • Failed to maintain complete trust account records
  • Failed to promptly notify clients of receipt of funds belonging to clients

As a consequence of his misconduct, the Wisconsin Supreme Court punished Winston by gifting him with a complimentary 90-day suspension of his law license.
