Attorney Lawrence Hammet II of Nashville, TN; ethical goblin

The state of Tennessee unfortunately presented Lawrence Buford Hammet II with a law license in 1989 after he graduated from Samford University School of Law.

The Board of Professional Responsibility found Larry guilty of engaging in the following misconduct.

• Withdrew disputed funds from his client trust account and paid himself a fee that exceeded the amount to which his client allegedly agreed
• Client filed a civil suit against Larry that was appealed after trial
• Appeals court found that Larry failed to keep the disputed funds in his trust account until the dispute was resolved and that he asked for unreasonable fees
• Appeals court awarded judgment of more than $67,000 and remanded the case to the trial court for a determination of pre-judgment interest
• The trial court subsequently awarded interest of more than $22,000 to Larry’s prior client [victim]

As a direct consequence of his misconduct, the enablers for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Tennessee Supreme Court punished Larry by gifting him with a complimentary censure.
