Attorney Joseph Mahoney of Elkton, MD; ethical ogre

The state of Maryland presented Joseph J. Mahoney with a law license in 1973 after he graduated from the University of Maryland School of Law.

The Office of Disciplinary Counsel (ODC) found Joey guilty of the following misconduct.

  • Improperly advanced $1,775 in living expenses to client in personal injury matter
  • Failed to make reasonable efforts to ensure that his employee’s conduct was compatible with his professional obligation as a lawyer
  • Failed to supervise his employee’s handling of the trust account
  • Failed to make sure the account was maintained in compliance with the rules of professional conduct
  • Commingled client funds with personal funds
  • Failed to assure that trust account was being reconciled on a regular basis
  • Used trust funds for purposes other than the purpose for which the funds were entrusted
  • Failed to keep complete records of deposits into and disbursements from his attorney trust account.

As a direct consequence of his misconduct, the apologists for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Maryland Supreme punished Joey by gifting him with a complimentary reprimand.

As we speak (ca. May 2020), Joey practices with the Law Office of Joseph J. Mahoney at 208 East Main Street in Elkton, Maryland.
