Attorney Richard Schmidt of Des Moines; convicted wife beater

The state of Iowa presented Richard R. Schmidt with a law license in 1994 after he graduated from Drake University Law School.

The Iowa Supreme Court Attorney Disciplinary Board found Dick Guilty of the following misconduct.

On one occasion, Dick and his wife began arguing about childcare issues. They were on the concrete patio near their hot tub. When his wife walked away from the argument, Dick grabbed her and threw her down, causing her to hit her head. Dick then began choking her, and she temporarily lost consciousness. Dick then chased her around the house, choking her two more times into unconsciousness. Subsequently, she was able to get up and fled to a neighbor’s house with Dick chasing after her.

Dick attacked his wife in the neighbor’s kitchen as she tried to call 911. Eventually, Dick and his wife began running through neighbor’s garage. During the entire time that Dick was assaulting his wife, his children were watching and screamed and cried for him to stop beating their mother.

After his arrest, Dick the Abuser pled guilty to two (2) aggravated misdemeanors involving domestic abuse crimes.

As a consequence of his misconduct, the Patron Saints for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Iowa Supreme Court Attorney Disciplinary Board punished Dick by gifting him with a complimentary 30-day suspension of his law license.

As we speak (ca. June 2014), Dick practices with Berg, Rouse, Spaulding & Schmidt, PLC at 2423 Ingersoll Avenue in Des Moines, Iowa.
