Attorney Robert Monfort of Rensselaer, IN; congenital liar

The state of Indiana presented Robert V. Monfort with a law license in 1988 after he graduated from DePaul University Law School.

The Indiana Disciplinary Commission found Bobby guilty of the following misconduct.

Bobby’s misconduct involved his conduct as an attorney and also his prior status as a judge on the Jasper County Superior Court bench in Rensselaer.

  • Represented client in a matter he adjudicated while on the bench
  • Engaged in an egregious conflict of interest
  • Knowingly made a false statement of fact to a trial judge
  • Engaged in conduct involving fraud, deceit, dishonesty or misrepresentation

The misconduct stems from two criminal drunk driving cases Bobby handled while on the bench, in which Bobby had convicted and sentenced the man to 365 days behind bars.

Almost ten years after he left the bench, the convicted man contacted Bobby to explore the possibility of have the convictions Bobby imposed as a Judge vacated. Bobby then met with the local prosecutor and when the matter later went to court, the man filed a petition that said he was acting pro se. However, at a hearing on the petition Bobby sat at counsel table with the defendant and told the presiding judge that he was not representing the man.

Later at the same hearing, the defendant testified that Bobby’s law office had prepared the petition and that he’d paid for Bobby’s legal services.

As a consequence of his misconduct, the apologists for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Indiana Supreme Court punished Bobby by gifting him with a complimentary 30-day suspension of his law license.

As we speak (ca. July 2014), Bobby practices at 112 West Washington Street in Rensselaer, Indiana.
