Attorney Michael Ragland of Indianapolis, IN; ethical troll

The state of Indiana provided Michael A. Ragland with a law license in 1987 after he graduated from the Indiana University School of Law.

The Indiana Disciplinary Commission found Mikey guilty of the following misconduct.

  • Failed to adequately communicate with several clients
  • Failed to appropriately represent client interests
  • Mismanaged funds he held on behalf of his clients in violation of the Rules of Professional Conduct
  • Accepted $18,000 offer of settlement without his client's authorization
  • Failed to keep his client advised of her continuing duties as personal representative of the estate
  • Failed to explain to his client the impact of executing the settlement and indemnity agreement
  • Engaged in conduct involving dishonesty, fraud, deceit, or misrepresentation
  • Telling his client that the Medicare subrogation lien would not have to be paid out of the settlement proceeds when that statement was false
  • Failed to prosecute his clients' actions
  • Failed to explain to his client that he had been suspended from the practice of law prior to the day of trial so that his client could make an informed decision on how to proceed with his case
  • Failed to keep his client reasonably informed as to the status of the pending legal action
  • Failed to file an appellate brief despite having been granted five extensions of time to do so
  • Failure to file appellate brief on client’s behalf led the court to dismiss the appeal
  • Failed to abide by the decisions of clients concerning the objectives of representation
  • Failed to abide by clients' decisions to accept an offer of settlement of a matter
  • Failed to act with due diligence (slacker)
  • Failed to explain matters to the extent reasonably necessary to permit clients to make informed decisions regarding representations
  • Failed to take steps to the extent reasonably practicable to protect clients' interests upon termination of representation
  • Moved trial court to withdraw client representation with no notice to the client and on the day settlement authorization was due

As a direct consequence of his misconduct, the cheerleaders for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Indiana Supreme Court punished Mikey by gifting him with a complimentary 6-month suspension of his law license.

As we speak (ca. May 2020), Mikey practices at 120 East Market Street in Indianapolis, Indiana.
