Attorney John Asselin-Connolly of New London, CT; ethical leprechaun

The state of Connecticut provided John Asselin-Connolly with a law license in 1976.

The Statewide Grievance Committee found John guilty of the following misconduct.

  1. Failed to keep client reasonably informed about status of legal matter
  2. Failed to respond to client requests for information
  3. Failed to explain matter to extent necessary to permit client to make informed decisions re: representation
  4. Failed to promptly inform client of decision/circumstance wherein client’s informed consent was required
  5. Failed to consult with client about means by which to accomplish client’s objectives
  6. Charged a clearly unreasonable or excessive fee (cheater)

In one matter, John represented Merrill Mazzella in a divorce matter. The fee agreement stated the copies would cost $0.25 per page for copying the clients file is John was fired. The agreement also called for charging the client a minimum of 3 hours of time for all court appearances and that the client would be charged $150 in addition to the usage fee for legal research conducted through internet databases.

Eventually John billed his client over $80,000 for dissolution of her marriage. An expert on legal fees in a dissolution matter in the New London area testified that the customary fee is $20,000 to $50,000. Therefore, Johnny attempted to overcharge his client $30,000 to $60,000 than any ethical attorney in New London would have charged for the same services.

As a consequence of his misconduct, the cheerleaders for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Statewide Grievance Committee punished John by gifting him with a complimentary reprimand.

As we speak (ca. March 2013) John practices with Asselin-Connolly LLC at 38 Granite Street in New London, Connecticut.
