Trump’s 5^th victim of Draining the Swamp: Elaine Chao

On 11/29/16, Donald “Trumporleone” Trump announced that he had selected the wife of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky to be the next Secretary of Transportation.

Elaine has spent much of career pigging out on public pork. In fact, after she married Mitch she was appointed to various jobs in the Bush administration.

During her prior tenure as Bush’s Secretary of Labor, OSHA failed to promulgate one single significant health standard. The Government Accountability Office analyzed 70,000 closed case files that were filed during Chao’s tenure and reported that the Wage and Hour Division did not adequately investigate complaints from low-and minimum-wage workers who had claimed that employers failed to pay the federal minimum wage, required overtime and/or files to issue a last employment check.

Of course, being a compliant lackey for the GOP required that Chao treat low-income workers with total disdain while giving cheating employers the proverbial wink and a nod.

As Secretary of Transportation, Chao will be able to act as an official cheerleader for the Trucking Industry in their ongoing efforts to allow over-the-road drivers to legally work at least 80-hours a week. With any luck, the Industry should be able to persuade Chao to approve a 100-hour work week for truckers, albeit with the provision that employers would not be required to pay any overtime wages.

One thing we can be assured of is that Chao will not engage in any conduct that can or could be construed as being beneficial to the working class. However, you can take it to the bank that she’ll consistently advocate for the rights of employers who wish to cheat their employees and/or provide them with unsafe working environments.
