Letters to the Editor

Like a Spoiled Child

When I read your article "Moyer: Dispatch is Palmer's mouthpiece" (July 4), I couldn't believe my eyes, but there it was in print. The chief justice of Ohio acting like a spoiled child because he and his cohorts got caught with their hands in the cookie jar.

So just like Justice Andy Douglas and other judges who have been found to be less than honorable by David Palmer, Chief Justice Moyer resorts to making scurrilous remarks!

I think Moyer needs to explain to all of us what he means by the remark "other Statehouse reporters are onto him." What I read in that statement is you, Chief Justice Moyer, have been putting the screws to others and defaming Mr. Palmer and they caved.

But it didn't work with the Dispatch (you forgot to mention the Canton Repository and the two great articles) and the Washington Post.

I couldn't find "quirky" in the legal dictionary so I checked Webster's. The word, which the Washington Post used, described your actions as being of a "peculiar trait of character."

Before reading your remarks, I just thought the other papers decided not to print the story because they were embarrassed for all to know what low caliber people we have elected. With the recent decision from the United States Supreme Court saying you can't hide behind the office, hopefully we can avoid electing "quirky" judges in the future.

In the meantime, Justice Moyer, quit being the playground bully. News is news, and we don't want the papers intimidated by your or anyone else.

Why do you even have cars? We certainly pay you enough and the Ohio Constitution says it's a no-no. Why are you billing us for any mileage but business mileage in your own vehicle? The rest of us don't have that privilege.

When I look at the whole picture, methinks you protest too much because you are in really deep and this time the prosecutor is not going to be able to hide it. As you know, he forgot to show up for the probable cause hearing. I'd give the prosecutor a call before the 15th hearing just to be sure he shows.

Kudos to Craig and Marrison

Thank for your report on the findings of Dispatch reporter Jon Craig incriminating certain members of the bench. I've followed Mr. Craig's work for some time and have found he not only writes with integrity but with the guts to inform us of things we may not want to hear.

Human nature is such that in general we will push the envelope. Those who are expected to set examples of law, order and social responsibility have a certain duty to resist temptation.

They didn't resist, got caught with their collective hands in the cookie jar and now need to be held accountable. Every grade-school child knows if you break the rules you suffer the consequences, including the possibilities of exposure and embarrassment.

I am appalled that the gas issue was common knowledge on the Statehouse beat but hasn't been exposed previously. I applaud Mr. Craig's tenacity and courage in sticking his neck out. If he doesn't, who will? If the answer is no one, then accountability is merely a concept.

Kudos to Dispatch Editor Ben Marrison for standing behind his staffer when the heat was on. Keep up the good work.

Margaret A. Downery
