Judge William Singletary of Jackson, MS; ethical elf, Il Duce Wannabee

Judge William Singletary sits on the Chancery Court in Jackson, Mississippi. In late 2006, Judge William Singletary was charged with the misconduct below while emulating Il Duce’s infamous conduct as the World War II dictator of Italy and close associate of Adolph Hitler.

In Oct. 2006 tax assessor Bob Merritt refilled an assault charge against Judge William Singletary for threatening him with a machete while he was assessing his property in early September 2006. Merritt had previously dropped the charge, saying he feared losing his job, but then refilled it.

Because Judge Singletary made light of the seriousness of the situation by bringing the machete into his courtroom shortly after Merritt claims he was threatened, Merritt felt compelled to refile assault charges against Singletary. When advised that Judge Singletary had brought the machete to his courtroom, Deputies told him to remove it.

Since the machete incident; Judge Singletary was involved in two more incidents wherein he manifested his Il Duce attributes.

Within several days, Judge Singletary was arrested by the Clinton Police on disorderly conduct and resisting arrest charges after a confrontation with neighbors over their barking dog.

In this incident, Judge Singletary went to a neighbor’s home because of the dog. The neighbor, Sarah Ammons said that Judge Singletary told us “to shut our dog up or else he’d shut it up for us.” “He laid his hand on our doorbell and it rang and rang and rang until we finally woke up,” Sarah said, adding that he then stuck his foot in her front door in an attempt to pry his way in” (aka, criminal trespassing). When police arrived, Judge Singletary began cursing at the officer, which led to his arrest for disorderly conduct.

Enabling Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance
Brant Brantley, executive director of the Mississippi Judicial Commission said that just because a judge is convicted of a misdemeanor doesn’t mean discipline will follow. You’re not telling us anything we don’t already know BB!
Dawg’s Commentary

Take my advice if you live in Judge William Singletary’s neighborhood and you own a dog, have the dog’s vocal chords detached unless you’re looking for a visit from a maniacal jurist armed with a machete who will likely engage your mutt in a little game of “slice and dice.”  In other words, if you see some demented feller donning a robe and brandishing a “machete,” don’t call the cops; just get the hell out of his way!
