State Rep. Bobby Harrell (R-SC): Today’s Public Official Misfit

Bobby initially duped the voters into electing him as a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives in 1992. In 2005, Bobby was elected by his fellow House members to be Speaker of the House.

Recently (09/10/02) Bobby was indicted on nine (9) criminal charges for illegal use of campaign funds. Some of the charges are as follows:

  • Falsified his private plane’s logbook to obtain travel expenses he never incurred
  • Misconduct in Office
  • False reporting of campaign disclosures
  • Spent $70,000 to pay administrative assistant at his insurance firm
  • Paid off credit card debt to pay for goods and services for his home
  • Received payments for travel even though trips were personal

In a lame attempt at levity, Bobby said that he never knowingly violated the law. Obviously, Bobby missed his calling as a standup comedian.

All that remains now is to see how long Bobby’s prison sentence will be.

As we speak (ca. September 2014), Bobby suspended himself from his position as Speaker of the House; however, he refused to resign.
