Judge Carlos Cortez of Dallas; abusive loser

The state of Texas presented a law license to Carlos Raul Cortez in 1996 after he graduated from Texas Wesleyan University Law School.

In late December 2013, Carlos was arrested after being accused of dragging his girlfriend by her hair and strangling her.

Police responded to a disturbance at about 2 a.m. on a Saturday morning with the responding officer observing red marks on the woman’s neck. The officer reported that:
  • The woman “pulled down the portion of her blouse which covered her neck and showed several red marks.”
  • “The red marks were clearly visible and appeared to encompass the majority of her neck.”
  • “Cortez walked up to her and grabbed her by her hair and throat with both hands impeding the flow of oxygen and causing dizziness.”
The woman told the officer that Judge Cortez dragged her by the hair and leaned her against the balcony, choking her for about 15 seconds and that he verbally threatened to kill her. The police report showed that a child in the home witnessed the incident.

After his arrest, Judge Cortez was criminally charged with assault, family violence and strangulation and was released on a $15,000 bond.

As expected, Cortez’s attorney defended the abuser by claiming the allegations were false. He went on to laughingly state, “Judge Cortez will continue to serve the State of Texas and Dallas County like he has for the last seven years – as an award winning jurist who handles his court with courtesy and dignity to all who seek Justice.”

All that remains now is to see if Cortez is convicted and what sentence he receives. If convicted, the Texas Supreme Court should remove him from the bench.

As we speak (ca. January 2014), Carlos remains sitting as a Dallas County State District Court Judge in Dallas, Texas.
