Judge Marvin Wiggins of Greensboro, AL; ethical misfit
The state of Alabama presented Marvin Wayne Wiggins with a law license in 1990 after he graduated from Howard University Law School.
The Alabama Court of the Judiciary found Marvin guilty of the following misconduct.
Marvin ascended to the bench in January 1999. Ms. Gay Nell Tinker, also known as Ms. Bobby Singleton is Judge Wiggin’s sister and was the circuit clerk of the Hale County Circuit Court from January 2001 to January 2007, and also acted as the absentee-election manager during the same time period. Mr. Bobby Singleton is married to Ms. Singleton and is therefore Judge Wiggins’ brother-in-law. Bobby was elected to the state Senate in January 2005 with 42% of the votes cast by absentee ballot. Ms. Carrie Reaves is Judge Wiggins’ first cousin.
In September 2004, the Alabama Attorney General began an investigation into voter fraud in Hale County, specifically regarding the alleged forgery and illegal verification of voter signatures on affidavits of absentee ballots, which included the 2005 elections.
Judge Wiggins’ three relatives, Clerk Tinker, Mr. Singleton and Ms Reaves were targets of the investigation. Despite this obvious conflict of interest, Wiggins refused to recuse himself from the case. In fact, he did everything he could to remain on the case so that he could continue to render rulings that favored his family members.
As a consequence of his misconduct, the cheerleaders for Judicial Misfits sitting on the Alabama Supreme Court punished Marvin by gifting him with a complimentary censure.
As we speak (ca. August 2013), Marvin continues to sit as a judge on the 4th Judicial Circuit Court in Greensboro, Alabama.
