Attorney Melody Cooper of Corpus Christi; ethical dwarf

The state of Texas presented Melody Cooper with a law license in 1987 after she graduated from the University of Texas Law School.

The Grievance Committee found Melody guilty of the following misconduct.

In one matter, Melody represented Dr. Pedro Torres and his wife, Mafalda, who sought custody of their newborn granddaughter. Melody filed a series of legal papers seeking to move the case from California, the biological parents’ state of residence, to Texas.

The child’s father, Barnaby Hopkins, hired a Corpus Christi lawyer to contest jurisdiction. Melody filed a motion to dismiss the case with Judge Sandra Watts in District Court in Corpus Christi. 51 minutes later, Melody filed the same motion to dismiss with Judge Tom Greenwell of the 319th District Court in Corpus Christi.

Melody did not disclose the existence of the initial custody case in the case before Judge Greenwell. Melody also failed to advise Hopkins’ attorney of the second filing or provide him with a copy of the petition she filed.

Subsequently, Judge Sandra Watts ordered Melody to pay more than $9,200 in fines and court costs.

As a consequence of her misconduct, the enablers for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Texas Supreme Court punished Melody by gifting her with a complimentary reprimand.

As we speak (ca. August 2013), Melody practices at 2801 Santa Fe Street in Corpus Christi, Texas.
