Attorney Steven Zelig of Santa Monica, CA; ethical dwarf, bully

The state of California provided Steven Zelig with a law license in 1980 after he graduated from Loyola Law College in Los Angeles.

The State Bar Court found Steven guilty of the following misconduct.

In one matter, Steven sued an insurance company after claiming his client suffered damages during the Northridge earthquake even though his client wasn’t insured by the targeted insurance company.

Steven never dismissed the sham lawsuit, thereby causing the insurer to spend more than $30,000 in defending it. Subsequently, the insurer filed a malicious prosecution claim against Steven, who later reached a settlement in which he agreed to pay $45,000 within 30 days.

When Steven failed to pay the $45,000, the trial court sanctioned him $8,250 and ordered that he pay the sanction within 30 days. However, Steven didn’t pay the sanction as ordered by the court. Steven then appealed the ruling; however, the appeals court denied the appeal and he was sanctioned another $7,500 for engaging in frivolous conduct. Again, Steven failed to pay the $7,500 sanction. Making matters worse, Steven failed to report the two sanctions to the State Bar Court as required by the rules.

In another matter, Steven disobeyed a court order by failing to pay sanctions on time and he maintained an unjust, frivolous lawsuit. Steven filed an amended complaint in federal court that included causes of action that had already been dismissed. The trial court then ordered a $4,032 sanction against Steven and ruled that his amended complaint “was made for the improper purpose of causing unnecessary delay and needlessly increasing the cost of litigation.”

As a consequence of his misconduct, the supporters for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Bar Court punished Steven by gifting him with a complimentary stayed 1-year suspension of his law license. In truth, the comedians sitting on the Bar Court didn’t mete out any meaningful punishment to Steven.

As we speak (ca. June 2013) Steven practices with Brentwood Legal Services, LLP at 1542 7th Street in Santa Monica, California.
