Ex- Judge Anne Ashby of Dallas a scofflaw; ethically deprived

From 1989 through early 2009, Judge Anne Ashby sat on the 134th District Court in Dallas.  Judge Anne Ashby is now employed by Collins Basinger & Pullman, a law firm located in Dallas.
Judge Anne Ashby in Vegas to Preside over Renewed Wedding Vows
Texas Election laws prohibit the use of campaign funds for personal use. Put simply, campaign funds can only be spent on official officeholder duties and/or for legitimate campaign purposes.
In June 2006, Judge Anne Ashby decided she would illegally use campaign funds to travel to Las Vegas to preside over the renewed wedding vows of a friend. Those illegal expenses are as follows:
  • Judge Anne Ashby: American Airlines - 20060106,393.55, Preside over renewed wedding vows
  • Judge Anne Ashby: Bellagio Hotel, 20060403, 1437.34 - Preside over renewed wedding vows
Judge Anne Ashby’s expenditure of nearly $2,000 for airfare and lodging at the Bellagio in Las Vegas to preside over her friends renewed wedding vows was clearly an illegal act.
This ol’ Dawg has been to Las Vegas nearly fifty times (ca. 1972-2009) and I’ve never paid $1,437 to stay at any hotel, and I’ve stayed at them all. Clearly, Judge Anne Ashby must have holed up in a luxury room for her 2-3 day stay.
Obviously, Judge Anne Ashby didn’t much give a damn how much she spent on lodging since it didn’t cost her a single dime, right?
Judge Anne Ashby paying for courthouse cleaning
In June 2006, Judge Anne Ashby used $165 of campaign funds to pay for “courthouse cleaning” as set forth below.
  • Judge Anne Ashby: Lechon, Maria, 20060427, 165.00, office holder expense - courthouse cleaning
I fail to see how this expense had anything to do with Judge Anne Ashby’s official judicial duties. Clearly, it had nothing to do with any legitimate campaign related expense.
I’m sure that the government in Dallas has employees that perform “courthouse cleaning” on a daily basis, right?
