Attorney Joseph Haddad of Bridgeport, CT; ethical dwarf

The state of Connecticut provided Joseph P. Haddad with a law license in 1983 after he graduated from the University of Bridgeport Law School.

The Statewide Grievance Committee found Joseph guilty of the following misconduct.

In one matter, Joseph represented David Taft in regards to injuries he received in a auto accident. Taft was treated for his injuries at the Bogannam Chiropractic Office in Trumbull, Connecticut. At the time that Taft was treated for his injuries he was not covered under a medical insurance policy.

Subsequently, Joseph provided Bogannam Chiropractic with a letter of protection which read, in part, as follows:

“The reasonable fees incurred by you in the treatment of my client’s injuries, which treatment fee does not include interest, finance charges, missed appointment fees, or any other surcharges which are unpaid by my client’s available insurance, will be protected in the event this matter is resolved by settlement or judgment against the third party tortfeasor. Those fees that have been paid by my client’s health and/or automobile insurance will be paid from the net proceeds of a settlement or judgment.”

Shortly thereafter, Joseph settled Taft’s claim. The settlement statement prepared by Joseph indicated a gross settlement amount of $9,200. Itemized deductions included a $3,066 attorney fee, expenses, and payments paid to specific medical providers. The settlement statement also said that Bogannam was due $725 and that Joseph’s client was responsible for that debt.

Bogannam was not notified by Joseph of Taft’s matter had settled. Subsequently, an employee of Bogannam learned of the settlement about two years after the fact. Shortly thereafter, Bogannam contacted Joseph requesting payment. When Joseph refused to pay the bill, Bogannam filed an ethics complaint against him.

As a consequence of his misconduct, the apologists for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Statewide Grievance Committee punished Joseph by gifting him with a complimentary reprimand.

As we speak (ca. May 2013) Joseph practices at 144 Golden Hill Street in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
