Judge Samuel Nuchia of Houston; scofflaw, ethical twerp

Judge Samuel Nuchia previously sat on the 1st District Court of Appeals in Houston. Fortunately, the voters in Harris Count voted Judge Samuel Nuchia out of office in November 2008.

Texas Ethics Laws limits the expenditure of campaigns funds to legitimate campaign activities and/or official officeholder duties. In other words, campaign funds cannot be used for purposes that are clearly personal in nature.

License plates for Judge Samuel Nuchia's personal car

While he was sitting on the court of appeals, Judge Samuel Nuchia found it appropriate to use campaign funds to pay the cost of annual license plates for his personal car; albeit he ordered them emblazoned with the word “judge.” Judge Samuel Nuchia’s license plate expenditures are set forth below.
  • Harris County Tax Assessor, 20010228, 134.60, License plates
  • Harris county tax assessor, 20020319, 142.60, license plates
  • Harris county tax assessor, 00030318, 142.00, license plates
  • Harris county tax assessor, 20040405, 109.36, license plates
  • Harris co tax ass, 20050106, 144.60, license plates
  • Harris tax ass, collector, 20061215, 136.60, judge license plates

Of course having a license plate on your personal car with the word "judge" emblazoned on it carries some benefits, right? Obviously, some law enforcement officers will give the proverbial wink and a nod to a judge who is violating the traffic laws. Never know when ya might need a friendly judge to obtain a wrongful conviction, right?

Of course the same benefit inures to the benefit to other family members of a judge who drive the judge's personal car, right? And that's the way it should be, right boys and girls? After all, should the offspring of a judge be able to skirt the law with impunity just like Mommy and Daddy do?
