Attorney William Brown of Fayetteville, NC; ethical dwarf

The state of North Carolina presented William E. Brown with a law license in 1993.

The Grievance Committee of the North Carolina State Bar charged William with the following misconduct.
  1. Failed to act with due diligence (slacker)
  2. Collected a clearly excessive fee (crook)
  3. Failed to respond to repeated requests for information from Bar re: seven complaints
  4. Commingled client funds with personal funds
  5. Engaged in conduct prejudicial to the administration of justice
  6. Attempted to prevent a client from dealing with State Bar re: his misconduct
In one matter, Veronica Morrison hired William to represent her in a legal matter. Subsequently, Veronica filed a Petition for Resolution of Disputed Fee against William with the North Carolina State Bar. On six (6) occasions, William failed to respond to State Bar inquires regarding the matter.

In another matter, Jackie Godwin, Jr. hired William to file a child custody action on his behalf. Godwin paid William $900 of the $1,000 of his quoted flat fee for said representation.

Four months passed, and William had yet to file anything on behalf of Godwin. Godwin then filed a fee dispute action with the State Bar against William.

All that’s left now is for the North Carolina Supreme Court to determine the punishment that William will receive for his egregious misconduct

As we speak (ca. March 2013) William continues to practice in the Fayetteville, North Carolina area.
