Attorney Richard Lord of Brunswick, ME; ethical dwarf

The state of Maine presented Richard A. Lord with a law license in 1965 after he graduated from the University of Maine Law School.

The Maine Grievance Commission found Richard guilty of the following misconduct.
  • Charged a clearly illegal and excessive fee (crook)
  • Engaged in a conflict of interest
  • Failed to act with due diligence (slacker)
For many years Lord was the personal attorney for Denise Cloutier, and he drafter her Last Will & Testament when she was 70-years-old. Denise nominated Richard to be her Personal Representative (PR) of her estate. In preparing the will, Lord had the chutzpah to include language that allowed for him and only him to determine what a reasonable attorney fee would be for his alleged services. Of course he never advised Denise of this self-serving language.

In another matter, Lynn Currier hired Lord to represent her in a divorce from her then husband Richard. Three months later, the Sagadahoc County District Court granted Lynn’s divorce.

During their marriage, the Curriers had one child. Subsequently, Lord began representing Denise in post divorce litigation concerning child support. Richard then filed a Motion for Contempt against Richard.

Sometime after the divorce, Richard was charged with having committed a number of criminal offenses, and he sought out Lord to represent him. Although Lord agreed to represent Richard in at least two of the criminal matters, he neither disclosed to Denise nor obtained her informed written consent to Lord’s representation of her ex-husband Richard. In fact, Denise didn’t become aware of Lord’s representation of Richard until she checked with the Clerk’s Office in Lewiston.

As a consequence of her misconduct, the Patron Saints for Attorney Misfits sitting on the grievance panel punished Lord by gifting him with a complimentary 30-day suspension of his law license.

As we speak (May 2013) Lord practices at 52 Main Street in Brunswick, Maine.
