Attorney James Toran of Milwaukee; serial offender

The state of Wisconsin presented James E. with a law license in 1982 after he graduated from the University of Wisconsin Law School.

The Office of Lawyer Registration (OLR) found James guilty of the following misconduct.

In one matter, James represented a man on several criminal charges. The client’s family members paid James $1,500 for his representation. James failed to provide the client with a written fee agreement in violation of the rules.

In a second matter, James represented another man regarding criminal charges. The client paid James $2,500 in fees. James again failed to provide the client with a written fee agreement as required by the rules.

During the disciplinary investigation, James lied when he indicated that he had visited his client in jail; however, the jail had no records of any such visit. In fact, the jail had records of t he client’s visitors during the relevant time period but those proved James did not visit the client.

In a third matter, James represented a client charged with armed robbery. James failed to respond to appellate counsel’s requests for the client’s file and failed to promptly deliver the client’s file to the appellate attorney.

As one would suspect, this wasn’t James’ 1st bite at the Attorney Misfit Apple Tree. James was disciplined for engaging in a variety of misconduct on three (3) prior occasions. He received (a) a complimentary 180-day suspension of his law license, (b) a complimentary reprimand, and (c) a complimentary private reprimand.

As a consequence of his most recent misconduct, the Patron Saints for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Wisconsin Supreme Court punished James by gifting him with a complimentary reprimand. .

As we speak (ca. March 2013) James practices with the Law Offices of James E. Toran at 3900 West Brown Deer Road in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
