Attorney Joseph Moniz of Hartford, CT; ethical goblin

The state of Connecticut provided Joseph Moniz with a law license in 1975.

The Statewide Grievance Committee found Joseph guilty of the following misconduct.
  1. Failed to respond to grievance committee (Up Yours, said Joey!)
  2. Failed to communicate with client
  3. Failed to provide competent representation (Dumbo)
  4. Failed to engage in due diligence (slacker)
  5. Failed to keep client reasonably informed about status of legal matter
  6. Charged a clearly unreasonable fee
  7. Failed to provide client with written fee agreement
In one matter, Joseph was hired to obtain 5 documents for a client that she needed for an on-line story she was writing. The documents included an incident report, a copy of a Hartford dispatch center tape, a report from the fire departments, a report from AMR ambulance, copy of a security tape from Carabetta Management and a medical report from St. Francis Hospital. The client paid Joseph $500 to obtain the documents.

Subsequently, Joseph advised the client that he couldn’t obtain the medical records; however, he never provided her with the other four (4) documents. Following the deadline for her to complete her story, the client called Joseph’s office every week requesting the status of obtaining the remaining documents. Joseph responded by saying he had faxed the remaining four documents to her; however, she never received Joe’s phantom fax. In fact, Joseph could never provide any proof that he sent the faxes to his client.

Eventually, Joseph agreed to refund the client’s $500 fee; however, he never did.

As a consequence of his misconduct, the cheerleaders for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Statewide Grievance Committee punished Joseph by gifting him with a complimentary reprimand.

As we speak (ca. February 2013) Joseph practices with Moniz & Associates at 100 Allyn Street in Hartford, Connecticut.
