Attorney Charles Oldham III of Matthews, NC; ethical gremlin

The state of North Carolina presented Charles Manly Oldham III with a law license in 2000.

The Grievance Committee of the North Carolina State Bar charged William with the following misconduct.
  1. Misconduct involved multiple offenses
  2. Misled clients by entering into agreements stating he could provide advice re: Pennsylvania law
  3. Formed a partnership with a non-lawyer that included the practice of law
  4. Shared legal fees with non-attorney
  5. Failed to communicate with clients
  6. Made misleading communications about his legal services
In one matter, Charles entered into an agreement with NovusDirect allowing Novus to hold itself out as a law firm and purport to offer legal services. Novus was in the business of debt adjusting in regards to home mortgages, etc. Novus collected up-front fees from debtors for the promised loan modifications services. The fees ranged from $2,500 to $5,000.

Charles allowed Novus to operate under the name of The Law Offices of Charles Oldham and thereby misled debtors into believing they were receiving services from a bona fide law firm.

Charles used a contract falsely stating he could provide legal advice and/or representation in states where he was not licensed to practice law. Charles also authorized the publication of a website for his law firm that contained testimonials from people who were not his clients and falsely asserted that his firm had helped thousands of homeowners just like you.

As a consequence of his misconduct the enablers for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Grievance Committee of the North Carolina State Bar punished William by gifting him with a complimentary stayed 2-year suspension of his law license. In truth, the comedians sitting on the Grievance Committee of the North Carolina State Bar didn’t mete out any meaningful punishment to Charles.

As we speak (ca. January 2013) Charles practices with the Law Office of Charles M. Oldham, PLLC in Mathews, North Carolina, which is in the Charlotte area.
