Attorney Steve Edwards of Grove City, OH; ethical leprechaun

The state of Ohio presented Steve J. Edwards with a law license in 1979 after he graduated from Ohio State University Law School.

The Board of Commissioners on Grievances and Discipline of the Ohio Supreme Court found Steve guilty of the following misconduct.
  1. Commingled client funds with his personal funds
  2. Engaged in conduct involving fraud, deceit, dishonesty or misrepresentation
  3. Engaged in conduct prejudicial to the administration of justice
  4. Engage din conduct adversely reflecting on his fitness to practice law
  5. Wrote check against insufficient fund account (rubber)
The major thrust of Steve’s misconduct related to him writing a bad check and misappropriating (stealing) client funds from a trust account.

Over a two and a half year period of time, Steve wrote ten (10) checks from personal use from his attorney trust account for a total of $69,500, and the last of said checks caused an overdraft of the account.

From May 2009 to October 2010, Steve wrote 10 checks for the following amounts that came from funds he held in trust for his clients.
  1. 05/28/09 = $10,000
  2. 11/13/09 = $12,000
  3. 12/05/09 = $5,000
  4. 05/12/10 = $15,000
  5. 08/10/10 = $10,000
  6. 08/13/10 = $7,500
  7. 09/16/10 = $5,000
  8. 09/24/10 = $2,500
  9. 10/12/10 = $2,500
  10. 10/15/10 = $2,500
During the disciplinary hearing, Eric testified that most of the misappropriated funds, $53,900, were loaned to his wife to financially support her private investigation business. Amazingly, Eric made the illegal loans to his wife four (4) years after they were separated.

Eric had the chutzpah to further testify that he wrote the checks to his wife because he “felt if he loaned her money, it would show her that he was able to provide for his family, and it would be a reason for the marriage to continue.” Obviously, Eric missed his calling as a standup comedian.

As a consequence of his misconduct, the Patron Saints for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Board of Commissioners on Grievances and Discipline of the Ohio Supreme Court recommended to the Ohio Supreme Court that Eric be punished by being gifted with a complimentary stayed 1-year suspension of his law license.

All that’s left now is to see if the enablers for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Ohio Supreme Court comply with the wishes of the comedians sitting on the Board of Commissioners.

As we speak (ca. December 2012) Steve practices at 4030 Broadway in Grove City, Ohio which is in the Columbus metropolitan area.
