The state of Connecticut provided Susan Leigh Beckett with a law license in 1987.
The Statewide Grievance Committee found Susan guilty of the following misconduct
In one matter involving a prior client, a fee dispute arose as to Susan’s fee after she was fired. The client sought to arrange for arbitration of the fee disputes, but Susan refused the offer by stating that she was entitled to the fee she had charged the client.
The client then sued Susan in small claims court seeking $650 in unearned fees. Susan filed an answer to the complaint, stating that she had already issued a $350 refund to her client. In truth, the client had never received such a refund.
After several court continuances, the client received a judgment from the small claims court for $650 plus $30 in costs. Shortly thereafter, Susan filed for bankruptcy. The client then sent Susan a letter seeking documentation proving her claim that she had previously paid her $350. The client never received any reply from Susan.
As a consequence of his misconduct, the cheerleaders for Attorney Misfits sitting on the Statewide Grievance Committee punished Susan by gifting her with a complimentary reprimand.
As we speak (ca. November 2012) Susan practices with Beckett Law LLC at 543 Prospect Street in Hartford, Connecticut.
