Justice Roberto Rivera-Soto of New Jersey; moron, ethical gremlin

Justice Roberto Rivera-Soto unfortunately sits on the New Jersey Supreme Court.

Sometime in 2006, Justice Roberto Rivera-Soto decided it was time to cement his status as a certified moron and ethical gimp.

In September 2006, Justice Roberto Rivera-Soto’s son told him that a football teammate had hit him. Apparently, the school warned the senior football player but did not see the need to take further action.

Shortly thereafter, Justice Roberto Rivera-Soto’s son told him that the senior football player had head-butted him during a touch football game. The school’s vice principal said it was an accident. However, this explanation didn’t sit well with his Imperial Majesty Justice Roberto Rivera-Soto.

Justice Roberto Rivera-Soto then decided it was time to cement his status as a pompous, arrogant, omnipotent moron by taking the following unethical actions.
  • Justice Roberto Rivera-Soto warned school officials if they did not act, he would go to state police and file a criminal complaint name the school officials.
  • Justice Roberto Rivera-Soto telephoned Camden Superior Court Judge Francis Orlando, Jr. at his home on Thanksgiving to report the alleged criminal conduct
  • Justice Roberto Rivera-Soto called the Haddonfield police chief, who sent a detective to his home and immediately handed him a Supreme Court business card
  • Justice Roberto Rivera-Soto was adamant that the senior football player be charged as an adult with aggravated assault.
  • Justice Roberto Rivera-Soto called football coach Frank Delano, and left a message stating he had called the police and “the ball was now in [Justice Roberto Rivera-Soto’s] court and he was going to take care of it from here.”
To assure that he would go down in New Jersey history as the Ultimate Judicial Moron in demanding that the senior football player be charged as an adult with felony assault, Justice Roberto Rivera-Soto cited a New Jersey statute to the detective covering assaults against judges. The Moron then say it could apply to a judge’s family. Give me a break dummy! I suppose next we’ll hear Justice Roberto Rivera-Soto claiming the assault against judges statute would apply if a judge’s paramour (mistress), hairdresser or even his favorite hooker was assaulted, right?

Ethics complaint and Punishment meted out to Justice Roberto Rivera-Soto

Eventually an ethics complaint was filed against Justice Roberto Rivera-Soto for abusing his official position in an arrogant and omnipotent manner. As expected, the New Jersey Supreme Court punished Justice Roberto Rivera-Soto by rewarding him with a “complimentary censure.”

Subsequent misconduct of Justice Roberto Rivera-Soto

During oral arguments before the New Jersey Supreme Court on February 3, 2009, Justice Roberto Rivera-Soto knowingly violated a court sealing order entered by the trial court, the court of appeals and the Supreme Court prohibiting the disclosure of the name of a police investigator.

A video of the Supreme Court proceedings show Justice Roberto Rivera-Soto interrupting the arguments of defense counsel to ask if the “unnamed individual” (police investigator) was Captain Bill Hunt.

The defense attorney was visibly upset and said, “Your Honor, that reference to the officer renders the sealing order that was entered by the trial court, the appellate division and this court a complete nullity.”

Justice Roberto Rivera-Soto the reclined in his chair and responded, “I just violated that sealing order. Let’s talk about Captain Hunt.”

An ethics complaint was filed against Justice Roberto Rivera-Soto for his misconduct in violating several court sealing orders; however, the New Jersey Judicial Commission found his conduct acceptable. What do ya think would happen to you if you violated several court orders?

Unfortunately Justice Roberto “The Omnipotent Moron” Rivera-Soto remains on the bench as a Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court. Isn’t that comforting folks?
